NILS HOLGER MOORMANN
Bavarian furniture creations
"There’s one thing I’m inflexible about, that is flexibility" - NILS HOLGER MOORMANN
A wind of change is stirring in German furniture development from Aschau on Chiemsee. Nils Holger has his very own head - he brought a fresh wind into the world of design. A pirate’s flag under the Bavarian blue and white skies. NILS HOLGER MOORMANN prefers to take up a position somewhere between the conventions of conventionality and makes himself comfortable in his pieces of furniture. They are not unlike the man himself: ascetic, well thought through with a nod and a wink to posterity that can't be easily missed.
Bavarian baroque meets avant-garde design
NILS HOLGER MOORMANN is an autodidact and a free spirit, an epitome of ‘Neues Deutsches Design’. From 1982 onwards he developed pure furniture designs with precise solutions in detail. Sounds simple enough and it is. Key thoughts are simplicity, intelligence, and innovation, the company’s philosophy. At times this makes life troublesome, creates an edginess or even a defensiveness but it speaks volumes for the timelessness and true Zeitgeist of the pieces themselves. Where better than here to find its roots for this furniture – between the rough mountains of German Chiemgau with its climate and its living traditions, among the stubborn beasts of the field and a far-reaching sense for ecological balance? This couldn't longer be achieved in a one-man show of the early eighties. The Moormann team is now made up of around 40 bright minds.
the hell of Aschau
It’s no wonder that NILS HOLGER MOORMANN loves wood so much. The name of the community Aschau is derived from Eschenaue (a field of ash trees). His affinity to his home region goes even further: Moormann is working with ash wood, birch plywood, MDF and other materials – all his furniture from the first prototype to the fully developed series are designed and manufactured in Aschau and its vicinity. He puts special emphasis on high quality of raw materials, prioritizes European kinds of wood and resource-friendly processing. Often he himself is struck by sudden brainwave for a new piece of furniture. But as well he implements new ideas from external designers ...
